Pi Day at Peace Love & Pie
What better place to find one's self on Pi Day (March 14) than at Peace Love & Pie in downtown Wichita? Located at 645 E. Douglas, Suite 104A and a short walk from my office made this a no-brainer. For $3.14 you could get a slice of delicious handmade pie. While the list of available pies was narrower than usual (and even narrower because someone thought they'd get all the strawberry rhubarb before I was able to get a slice), it was still a very delightful mid-day pick me up. Options were chocolate, cookies and cream, cookie dough, lemon custard, classic cherry, and Dutch apple.
I opted for the Dutch apple. Crumbly top. Fully filled filling. No soggy bottom. It was a delight. I slowed down with about 4 bites left. But, ain't no large slice of pie going to stop me on Pi Day!
The group also ordered slices of classic cherry pie and gluten-free strawberry rhubarb. Oh sure, I could have ordered the gluten-free strawberry rhubarb, but as for me: feed me gluten ‘til I die. The classic cherry was a fan favorite...while the gluten-free strawberry rhubarb was also consumed.
While not warm enough to eat it al fresco, our small group chose a table beside the never-ending line that snaked from the counter to the door. It is encouraging to see Wichitans with a similar mindset of turning up and supporting local eateries. And it wasn’t just slices of pie; we saw quite a few entire pies go out the door - only $20 on Pi Day special. Normally a whole pie is anywhere between $25-$30.
While the pie was indeed delicious to eat, the atmosphere of Peace Love & Pie was also delicious to see. The interior is a sort of retro bakery, cafe style. For as busy as they were it was remarkably clean and tidy. Each table had one of 3 etched options: "Peace" "Love" or “Pie" on the tabletop. Overall, the branding was consistent and cohesive. In the best way possible, it made you feel like you were not in Wichita but transported somewhere or sometime else. Very charming.
Pi Day this year was on a Monday when Peace Love & Pie is usually closed (usually open Wednesday-Friday 11:00am-6:00pm; Saturday-Sunday 10:00am-6:00pm). However, they were open for this special day. The staff also mentioned that while this was a great deal, they also have a Thursday afternoon Happy Hour where pie is always $3.40. While I could not verify this online, I am willing to appoint myself to be designated on assignment on behalf of the (3YUM6) team to, ya know, just double check the accuracy of this claim.
