Date Night at Newport Grill

Hello and welcome to (3YUM6)! My name is Olivia Hayse. I am a digital marketing professional and blogger, currently homeschooling and homesteading with my family outside Derby. My family and I moved to the area back in 2018, and naturally one of the first things I did was scour Instagram for the best eats and most helpful accounts. That is where I stumbled across the Wichita Podcast team. David and I each did a guest episode on the other’s podcast, and the rest is history. You can find the episode on my website here and the episode I did on the Wichita Podcast here.

My niche in this space will normally be farm-to-table; I hope to feature farm-to-table restaurants as well as farmers, farmers markets, and special events. Let’s be real though, as nice as it sounds in theory, no one eats one type of cuisine all the time. So today I get the privilege of reviewing one of my other favorite food genres: seafood! I come by my love of seafood honestly. My family is from Mexico and lived in the coast state of Tamaulipas. I also grew up in South Texas where fresh seafood is not hard to come by. When my family and I were toying with the idea of moving to Kansas, I had several friends legitimately concerned that I’d never be happy here due to the lack of seafood. Here is what I have learned: yummy seafood is very much a possibility in a landlocked state, you just have to spend a little more to get it, but it’s worth every penny!

A few weeks ago my husband and I went on a double date to Newport Grill: Seafood, Steaks, and Cocktails. I had heard this was THE place to go for seafood in Wichita, so I was very excited. Their website boasts fresh seafood shipped in six days a week, with everything made from scratch using natural products bought locally. I knew going in they had some of my favorite seafood dishes on the menu and even though it was a chilly March night, I appreciated the ambiance of sitting right next to the window and overlooking the water at Bradley Fair.

Newport is located at 1900 N Rock Road and is open Monday through Thursday 11:00am to 10:00pm; Friday and Saturday 11:00am to 11:00pm; and Sunday 10:00am to 9:00pm with brunch being 10:00am to 2:00pm.

I started with “casino style” oysters, which are slightly baked with bacon and pepper bits. They were absolutely amazing. If you’re looking to try oysters for the first time, do yourself a favor and order them cooked and flavored in some way.

Next, I had a bowl of their clam chowder. This was probably the best clam chowder I have ever had! Before this, the best clam chowder I had was literally from a small shack down on the docks in Monterrey, California. I didn’t think anything could compete with that kind of freshness, but I was happily proven wrong.

For my main dish I had the Georges Bank Scallops which is scallops over black garlic risotto made with coconut milk, tomato and shishito peppers. I have to be honest that the risotto wasn’t my favorite (which is my fault because I remembered after the fact I don’t love coconut milk). But oh my gosh, the scallops! The scallops were the biggest scallops I have ever seen and more than made up for the risotto. The bites in which each of this dish’s ingredients mixed together in my mouth were simply magical.

As great as the food was, I have to say the drinks and the service were the cherries on top of the night. I had a craft cocktail they called “PEAR-adise” which was a twist on a Moscow Mule flavored oh-so-perfectly with pear. Also, our entire group thoroughly enjoyed the service from our waiter. Absolutely no complaints on that front. I can’t wait to go back to Newport again, and I can’t wait to share more #3YUM6 adventures with you!

Until next time,

XO - Olivia
