A Taste of Paris in Wichita - George’s French Bistro

Not to sound like a snob, but the first time I ever had escargot and Duck L'Orange I was actually in Paris, France. My dad works for a French owned company and he used to go to Paris about once a year for a big meeting. One year I was lucky enough to accompany him and it was life-changing. Fast forward to the present day, my husband and I have a little homestead outside of Derby. Last year we added ducks to our farm and they are so much fun. We’ve had duck eggs over the past year and have gotten the occasional request for duck meat. My husband was not sure he’d actually had duck before, so before diving into this endeavor we set out to experience the best duck Wichita has to offer.

I had only been to George’s French Bistro (4618 E Central Ave) once before, with a group of girls to celebrate a birthday. George’s was the perfect environment for a “cute dinner” - aka a dinner where half the fun is to get dressed up cute and enjoy the equally cute ambiance. My husband and I also happened to have an anniversary the week before we went, so that plus our desire for duck meant another visit to George’s was in order!

George’s website boasts “a warm and friendly neighborhood restaurant that embraces the culture of dining at a true French bistro,” and “thoughtfully selected wine or a specialty cocktail to complete the transporting experience.” Also on their website you can see tons of press where they’ve been named one of the best restaurants in Wichita, one of the most romantic restaurants in Wichita, and even one of the best French restaurants in all of Kansas!

To start, we had poutine fries, which are fries topped with beef tenderloin, cheddar cheese curds, beef gravy and provolone cheese. They were sinfully good!

For our main courses, I had the seafood linguine which is linguini pasta with little neck clams, mussels, rock shrimp, bay scallops tossed in a clam juice, lemon juice butter sauce.

And my husband of course stayed on mission and had the Duck L’Orange which is two duck confit legs topped with house made L’Orange sauce, served with a sweet potato and carrot purée and a white bean & pork sausage side.

For my drink, I did the “Fleur Spritz” which is gin, simple syrup, lemon juice, and prosecco. I love a good signature cocktail with bubbles! It was basically an adult lemonade and did not disappoint. I could have sat on the patio sipping endless amounts of Fleur Spritzes had time allowed!

For our dessert we had the Opera Cake, which was perfectly spongy with a caramel drizzle and almond cluster on top. They even added a chocolate chip that said “Happy Anniversary” for us.

Overall, the experience at George’s was lovely. The skill in the food, the care in the service, and attention to detail really was perfection. If you have a special occasion to celebrate, I suggest making a reservation at George’s French Bistro! And for those following along, I do think we will be adding farm fresh duck meat to our farm offerings sometime in the future. YUM!
